Before you begin a diet however, there are a few things you must know. In fact, there are 5 things you must know in order to get the results you're truly after.
__ 1. Make sure your diet works with your schedule
I see this all too often. Many times, people are so excited to start a diet without truly taking into consideration everything that comes with it. Please remember, LIFE will still happen while you're on your diet. This means that there may be some times that you need to eat but you may be stuck in traffic with no food. And believe me, that's not what you want.
When you first start a diet, I suggest planning your eating around you current schedule. In fact, this brings me to my next point...
__ 2. Plan your diet in detail
Remember in the previous point where I said you may want to eat but you may be stuck in traffic? That's not what you want. So when you start your diet, plan out the times you're going to eat and what you're going to eat at those times.
If you think you're going to be in a position to miss a meal or two, pack your food in a container and take it with you.
Some diets are very effective - if you follow them. Sometimes life makes it hard to get the foods you want so always plan ahead.
With a diet, you don't want to take any chances, especially when your body is craving food. Speaking of cravings...
__ 3. You don't have to be perfect all the time, 80% of the time is optimal
Let's be honest - no one is perfect. There will be some times when you will miss meals or want to have a "cheat" meal. Truth be told, you don't have to be perfect or 100% strict on your diet in order for it to be successful.
If you eat correctly 80 to 90 percent of the time, the 10 percent that you're not perfect won't matter. I certainly don't eat healthy all the time and I'm able to maintain a body fat percentage less than 12% year round! True, genetics and my workout have a lot to do with it, but what you choose to fuel your body with does too.
Think about it - if you have $100,000, spending $10,000 won't seem like much to you. The same goes for your body. So if you're going to eat clean and healthy 80% of the time, make sure that 80% counts! You want to make sure you're doing what you're supposed to because that 80% will count more towards your goals than you think. And speaking of which, this brings us to point 4...
__ 4. When you start a diet or eating plan, COMMIT TO IT..
I don't know how many people I've run into who have started a diet expecting results, only to quit a few days later.
Listen, your body will not change overnight. I guarantee you that it didn't take one night for you to get in the shape you're in now, so don't expect it to go away that fast either. It's going to take real commitment to stick it out and do it - even when you don't want to.
Doing it when you don't want to is what's going to result in faster results for you in the long run.
__ 5. Make sure each of your meals has a good nutrient mix
There are many diets on the market today that have you eliminating protein or carbs, but will give you no good reason as to why. In order for your body to work best, you need protein, carbohydrates, and fat to function.
The key to making this work is to ensure you're eating the foods in the right mix of nutrients. If you're trying to lose fat, you certainly don't want your foods to contain a lot of fat right? So don't pick a lot of foods for your diet that contain excess amounts of fat.
Fast foods are notorious for having extremely unhealthy amount of fat in them. So if you truly want to succeed at your diet, do your best to limit the amount of fast food you eat and increase the amount of good food to make sure you're not sabotaging yourself.
So there you have it! If you heed these five tips, your diet plan will be much more successful in the long run. Not only that, but you'll feel better and most of all - look better!
